Collages
Feathers Over StonesThis painting came to me in a dream. I had already painted the stones on canvas with acrylic but knew at the time it was not done. When it appeared to me in my dream with an opaque cover over the stones I knew what I needed to do. The next morning I went to my studio and collaged rice paper over the whole canvas. Then a poet friend, Dorothy Brooks told me the rice paper looked like feathers, hence the title.

French HaikuMany times when I have completed one of my grid collages there are bits of paper left on the table. These small remains are irresistible and beg to be reused, not thrown away. Last year I began to take these pieces and form what I think of as Haiku's, where chance is the guiding design and like poetry the negative space is as equally important as the positive. |

Having birthed three boys I had developed a natural propensity to store away objects like paper planes. The wooden nickel came from a bowling alley in Fairhope, Alabama. These and other game pieces felt like fun things to build a collage around. Like writers who receive an image from which they start a novel or song, sometimes that small object is all I need to set to work.
GrowthThis collage started with the blue and ochre monoprint in the left corner. My objective was to have layers and layers of different textures built in a grid.Feathers, paper bags, and heart monitor tape are included. I have long admired the work of artist Lenore Tawney and so this is a tribute to her.
